Useful iPod Apps

 Personal Apps

1. Go Pedometer
I plan on using this application daily to track the amout of walking I do, as well as the speed at which I walk and the calories I burn. I feel like I walk a lot at school and want to keep track. I am also starting to exercise more, and wish to note my progress.

2.
Dictionary!
I really like this application for when I am reading or hear a word and want to know more about it. It tells the part of speech and synonyms for the words.

3. Wise Acre
I have always wished to have an easy source for daily quotes. I like to share them with my students, a few of whom like to refer to them in various contexts.

4. Cookie Doodle
Okay, so maybe this isn't useful, but it is very cute and keeps my own kids preocuupied, so it is useful in that way. How much fun to be able to make cookies by rolling out the dough, baking the cookie, then being able to decorate it, then virtually eat it!

5. Pandora Radio
Pandora is a great way for me to relax. I like the option of being able to listen to a variety of music that I mostly like, while being introduced to new music at the same time.

Educational Apps

1. Dragon Dictation
This seems like a very cool application. I would like to use it as a tool to take anecdotal records on my students after a conference or small group discussion. I'm not sure though, how I could easily transfer the notes to where I want them to go.

2. Free Books
I originally thought these were audio books. I wanted to be able to plug my iPod into my wireless microphone in my classroom and let the students listen to some classics right away in the morning and at the very end of the day. I think having a store of ebooks is a great option, anyway, however. Most young people won't forget their iPods or iPhones, and can always have a book with them with Free Books.

3. Pop Math Lite
This is a math fact practice application. I like this one because it is visually appealing with numbers and problems floating around in bubbles. It is a math matching game in which you try to pop the matching bubbles (problem to the answer). I really like that you can choose the tables that you want to practice, so if you have a student who struggles with 9s in multiplication/division, you can have the student focus only on the 9s facts.

4. Learn Sight Words
This is an application that I downloaded with my struggling readers and spellers in mind. This app has 300 high frequency sight word flashcards on it. My 6-year old son loves this. He tries to say the word then checks to see if he is right by listening to the "girl" say the word. If he gets it wrong he can flag the word to practice at a different time.

5. Math Drills Lite
This is an application that I downloaded with my daughter in mind. She does not like to practice math facts, but doesn't mind when she gets to use the iPod with this app. Students can choose the operation they'd like to practice, they get timed, get tips, and get quizzed. I have some students who struggle with their facts but love technology. If they had an iPod, I'm sure they'd be more engaged.
